Phleng Khmer (Cambodian Music) In addition to a rigorous program of dance instruction, Cambodian American Heritage also provides instruction free-of-charge to individuals wanting to learn the art of Cambodian music. We are fortunate to have two of the foremost Cambodian musicians in the United States affiliated with our organization. Master Chum Ngek lives in the Washington, DC. area and works with numerous students both with Cambodian American Heritage and with the Cambodian Buddhist temple in Silver Spring, Maryland. Master Chum Ngek is profiled with the master dancers in the Profile section of the website. Dr. Chinnary Ung is a noted musicologist and composer at the University of California in San Diego. Dr. Ung is also a longtime member of the board of directors of Cambodian American Heritage. In our annual observance of Cambodian New Year, we feature a recital performance by the students of Master Chum Ngek. In 1999, Dr. Ung and his sister Helen joined the ensemble. This recital performance is an opportunity for members of the student ensemble to demonstrate their growing knowledge of Cambodian music, playing a variety of music selections and featuring various Cambodian instruments including drums, xylophones, dulcimers, violins and other instruments. Pictured are some of this year's performers including (left to right) Amro Veun, Tevy Veun, Dr. Chinnary Ung, Mohory Nak, Kanitha Veun, Helen Ung and Seng Chao. |
